Business changes?
When you’re facing changes in your business, it can often feel very negative. You can experience a sense of loss for the things which you’re changing – but does it have to be like this?
Here’s 3 things that you need to know to help you face change positively:
(1) Don’t put it off – face business changes head on
This is particularly true if the change is not something you started and/or wanted. For example, a change in compliance or law which impacts how you do things and mean you have to make changes. What about making changes to protect your business, like getting business terms and conditions? Perhaps you like the way that you’ve been running your business. Perhaps you just don’t see why you have to change. This type of change is not going to go away. It has to be done.
Unfortunately, sometimes change is inevitable. Ignoring it won’t make it go away. It has to be done and this can make it very uncomfortable. In this situation it is so easy to either
- Ignore it
- Put it off
- Be very half-heated and do it without any enthusiasm.
These might seem like options, but they never really are. You might think you can put change off or leave it to the last minute. You could, but you’re actually getting in your own way.
Even worse, you could be sending your business on the path to failure.
(2) Don’t get in your own way
Right, I’m going to come straight out with it. One of the things that makes business change very difficult is our attitude to it. We might not want to think about it in quite this way, but it’s true. Yes, you could spend your time
- Whining and whingeing and/or
- Feeling sorry for yourself.
Instead, why not use that time to just get on with it. I know that sometimes I can spend an hour wrapped up in both of these emotions only to find that the thing I’m griping about actually only took me 20 minutes to do. What a waste of time!
(3) Look on business changes as an opportunity
When we’re used to doing things in a certain way, we can miss the things that will make what we do even better.
Most people don’t take the time to sit back and analyse their business because they’re too busy ‘doing’ that business.
When you need to make some changes, use it as opportunity to look at the way in which you are running your business. Take the time to review how you do things. Break down the elements of your business, such as onboarding clients/buyers and analyse them.
Whatever you are reviewing, ask yourself these 3 straightforward questions:
- Can I change the way I’m doing this?
- What can I do?
- Will this improve things for me, my business and my clients/buyers?
I can guarantee that if you’re facing change head on and without getting in your own way that you will inevitably make changes that will make it better for your you, your business and those you sell to.
Facing business changes are not always easy and the journey can be uncomfortable BUT it can be positive and improve your business IF you let it.
